Mellor is a small village set in the Lancashire countryside. St Mary's church was opened in 1829. the Architects were Richman and Hutchinson. It is late Georgian, largely unaltered with some addition in the 1890s The north aisle has a full side of stain glass by Jean-Baptiste Capronnier. The pews and interior wood work is carved English oak with a magnificent screen and altar. The church benefited from the patronage of a large local brewing family the Thwaites. Many of the family are buried in the church yard.
