St Peter

St Peter’s has many significant features including gargoyles and corbels and a number of ancient carvings on the walls. Ancient sedilia and piscina can be found recessed into the walls of the chancel and south aisle. The clerestory windows with their 17th century glass flood the church with light.

The Digby family tombs are of particular interest. In the south aisle the tomb chest and effigy of Sir Jehan De Diggebye and his wife Arabella de Harcourt are dated 1269. The church was built by their great grandfather Everard. The tomb chest against the south wall of Sir Everard Digby is dated 1509. He fought on the side of Henry Tudor,Earl of Richmond,at the Battle of Bosworth in 1485 where King Richard lll was defeated. The great grandson of Everard was involved in and executed for his part in the Gunpowder Plot of 1605. There are also some interesting wall memorial tablets. The oldest is dedicated to Augustin Nichols, his wife and 12 children dated 1617.

St Peter’s is surrounded by a lovely churchyard which is looked after by the ‘Churchyard Gang’. There is a Grade ll medieval preaching cross in the churchyard and a World War l Memorial which is also Grade ll listed. The weathercock was regilded and is stamped with the date 1812.
