St Peter's was seen to reflect a bygone era when the glory of a Catholic England was unopposed and unsurpassed.
Lancaster Priory is a Grade I listed church located on a site that has seen Christian worship since Saxon times - around the 6th century. An important collection of Anglo Saxon carvings are on display at the west end. The present church dates from 1430, with some of the stones being reused from the earlier buildings. The current Tower was built in 1759 and according to Pevsner is 'solid and convincing ... evoking a medieval silhouette' and 'can claim kinship with Tom Tower and All Souls Oxford, the Wren churches, etc.'.
The West Tower is one of Lancaster's best-known and best-loved landmarks, but suffers from ingress of water through rotting Tower timber louvres and failing pointing between stonework. The project will complete urgent repairs to the south elevation; repoint in lime all mortar joints to external wall faces; refix loose or missing decorative features; including fleur-de-lys motif crocheted finial details to the buttresses; and refurbish timber louvres, amongst many other works.
