St Michael and All Angels

The church was constructed in 1870-71 by the builder J.D. Cowland to the designs of the architect James Edmeston, inpartnership with J.S. Edmeston. The building is ina Rhineland Romanesque style, unusual for the period. The walls are built of brick; with terracotta, red Mansfield and Forest of Dean stone dressings. There are leaded lights to the large round-headed windows, mostly with singlecolour/clear glass, but some with decorative painted stained glass.

St Michael and All Angels needs to undertake urgent repairs and identify a long-term sustainable future. The first need is for an accurate measured survey from which to develop design drawings.The second need is an asbestos survey to comply with Health and Safety Regulations.The third need is to undertake a costed feasibility study, to identify potential new income generating and community uses and to ensure there are no barriers to inclusion. For example, there needs to be step-free access throughout the main areas of the building, with accessible WC's and a baby change area, adequate lighting and a new heating system installed. It also needs to include a costed schedule of urgent repairs looking at the roofs, rainwater goods, stone work and heating and electical systems.
