On the St Cuthbert's Three Church Trail, this is a place of holy simplicity where St Cuthbert's coffin rested 1300 years ago.

The 'Knowe' is located in a very rural area, once home to Romans and the notorious Border Reivers; feuding, lawless, local families who raided each other’s farms taking livestock, goods, and possessions.

St Mary's dating from 1190, has a fine Norman chancel arch as well as good Victorian stained glass and a carved altar and font cover from the early 20th century.
