The church was built at the beginning of the 12th century by the local baron and during the course of this century both the nave and the choir were rebuilt, resulted in a building on a grand scale for a parish church (with a six bay nave, five bay choir, transepts and a central tower).

The nave subsequently collapsed apart from the easternmost bay which became the entrance to the church around the early 17th century. Much of the present church (lower tower and transept) are still a good examples of late Norman architecture while the choir and upper tower are 'transitional' architecturally.

The choir has been described as 'unsurpassed in the country' as an example of the development of English architecture.
