The first place of worship in Swinton was a Norman chapel of ease to Wath church, dedicated to St Mary Magdalene.

This 1000 year old Pilgrims church situated adjacent to the Ridgeway Path in a valley surrounded by fields of sheep and in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty is a haven of peace and continuity.

Although there is some evidence of a chapel having existed at the end of the 12th century, the earliest definite reference is of a licence is dated 1425.

Set in a conservation village the church, built in 1160, remains one of the finest examples of a Norman church still in use in Scotland.

Remains from the church’s early life and history can be seen just inside the church, there are fragments from a Saxon cross, an ancient gravestone with scissor markings, as well as remains from a Norman arch and some ancient stained glass from the medieval church.

Described as one of the prettiest and best proportioned churches of the Peak, it stands proud in a small hillside village and one of the highest villages in England.

Grade II listed 17th and 18th century chapel built to appear as a house when non conformists were persecuted.

St Andrew’s is a well proportioned and carefully built small Episcopal church, with original 'Mouseman' furnishings, beautiful stained glass and an unaltered C & F Harrison organ.
