A 12th century Grade I listed building with a historic place in the Durham diocesan history.

The church is a grade I listed building dating to the late 12th century and early 13th century.

St Mary's is a grade II listed building with plenty of interesting features including an internal baptistry pool, beautiful stained glass windows, balcony historically used by fisherman and very important links to the last invasion of Britain in 1797.

Pre Norman building of Dufton red sandstone with a fine carved hammer beam chancel ceiling, 11th century tower, unusual tympana, a dual sedilla and a piscina.

This church is well known because of its associations with the great Romantic poet William Wordsworth, who lived in nearby Dove Cottage and is buried in the churchyard.

Durham Castle has two chapels. The Norman Chapel is older than the cathedral. with unusual carvings.
