St Mary

Like the rest of the church, the tower has a somewhat complex building history, having been started in the 12th century and completed in the 14th. The differing styles of architecture from the different phases can be seen rising up through the tower's stages.

There was a church here in Saxon times, and fragments of that have been found, but the core of the church as it stands today is Norman, with massive piers in the nave and a splendid Norman chancel arch. There are additional Norman features, but these have been changed and adapted through the centuries.

The hammerbeam roof dates from the late 15th or early 16th century, and it, too, has seen many changes, with the result that only three of its original angles now survive.

There is a sumptuous 17th century monument in the church, with effigies of Sir Anthony Irby and his wife Elizabeth surrounded by columns.
