The building was begun in Tudor times, but in the 18th century the whole structure was enlarged and encased in Portland stone, causing the church to be described as 'a Tudor body in Georgian clothing'.

The stunning arcades and clerestory windows form a procession through the nave to a richly coloured Flemish glass window. Later windows commemorate William Caxton and Sir Walter Raleigh, and there are beautiful 20th century windows by the artist John Piper.
