Newtownbreda Baptist Church, Belfast was founded sixty years ago with the current modern place of worship dating from the late 1970’s.

A beautiful historic church, set on top of an early medieval ringed fort, with its distinctive round tower, the church was built by the people of the parish in 1885-7.

Built on high ground outside the current village centre with views south across the Rother valley, and north and west across the Weald, with the unusual five sweep Sandhurst windmill on the horizon.

Charing is a pretty village, and Market Place is lined with old buildings of flint and brick, including the ruins of an archbishop's palace.

The story goes that St Wyllow, a Christian hermit, was living nearby in 596, legend has it that he was killed beheaded but that he brought the head here, thus deciding where the church should be built.

Our church, a fine Grade I listed building dating from the 14th century, contains 33 late medieval bench ends, including one depicting a dog preaching to a pig!

The church was built, destroyed and rebuilt in the 16th and 17th centuries and was seat to renowned bishops Thomas Percy and Jeremy Taylor in their time.
