St Michael & All Angels church has a rich history going back nearly 800 years, is located in the Middleton Tyas Conservation Area and is a Grade I Listed Building.

Both the church and the churchyard have many items of archaeological interest including part of a Saxon cross, a 14th century grave cover and valuable hatchments from famous families. Many famous people have been a part of the history of the church and are buried in the graveyard including Admiral Sir Roger Backhouse who was the First Sea Lord during part of WWII; the famous fraudster Sir Edmund Backhouse, whose bank merged with Barclays, Reverend Dr John Mawer who was England’s greatest linguist being fluent in 22 languages.

There is evidence both within and outside the churchyard of copper mining that took place in the 18th century. All this rich tapestry offers visitors opportunities to discover and learn about the buildings, artefacts and people who have been part of Middleton Tyas heritage for over 1000 years.
