A large (for Herefordshire) 13th century building largely in decorated Gothic style.
Ross on Wye, Herefordshire
The parish church of St Mary the Virgin in Ross on Wye is, one of the largest churches in Hereford Diocese. The church serves a town of some 10,000 inhabitants.
The current building dates from 1284, it is believed there were earlier churches on the site, certainly in the town, and the building we see today was pretty much built by 1316 when it was dedicated. Two major Victorian restorations are responsible for the feel of the building today. The church is open every day to visitors and for private prayer.
The spire of St Mary’s, towering 205 feet into the air, can be seen from miles around as a welcome to worshippers and visitors. From the Prospect, adjacent to the churchyard, there are views across the horse shoe bend of the River Wye to Brampton Abbots, and well beyond the boundaries of the Ross Benefice as far as the Welsh Mountains.
