A haven of peace at the gateway to the city of Oxford.

It is believed that the present building has its origins in 12th century but there was probably an earlier Anglo Saxon or even Celtic church, for the boundary of the original churchyard forms an almost perfect circle, a feature shared with many churches of known Celtic origin.

St Barnabas Jericho (affectionately known as ‘Oxford Basilica’), will surely strike you by how vast, broad, tall and spacious the building is, with its large arches, its majestic sanctuary and altar and its striking Venetian bell tower or campanile.

The chapel was designed by Basil Champneys as the parish church of St Peter le Bailey and dates from 1874.

Christ Church College in Oxford is unique in having the only college chapel that is also a cathedral, founded as a convent by St Frideswide in the 8th century, but the oldest parts of the church date from the 12th century, when it was place of pilgrimage.

The church is one of the most spectacular Romanesque parish churches in England, its timeless rural setting does nothing to prepare you for the shock of the west front of the church and the riot of 12th century carving both outside and inside the building.

Hidden among trees, and reached by track and footpath, this tiny meeting house is hard to find and reach.
