Cwm hir was founded in the 12th century as a daughter house to Whitland but all that remains is the ruined 12th century nave.

St Peter's is an outstanding example of the decorated style of architecture, with its warm red sandstone and distinctive shingled spire and clay tiled roof, an unusual feature in the Lake District.

There has been a Christian church on this site since at least 633 AD, as recorded by the Veneral Bede who mentioned that there was a church and a priest during the time of the Battle of Hatfield in that same year.

Built in 1867 the building is one of Frederick Preedy's more unusual and elaborately detailed designs and the plan and decoration of the chancel are particularly noteworthy.
