This town centre church dates from the early 13th century but was much rebuilt following a fire in 1290 which devastated much of the town.

It contains a chapel dedicated to St Richard of Chichester, who was born and brought up in the parish. The upper part of the tower was demolished in 1928 because of the threat of subsidence from the nearby salt workings, the main local industry from Roman times until the 19th century.
