There are two distinct reasons for coming here. The rare medieval wooden effigies and the association with the great nonconformist missionary William Carey (1761–1834).

The church is one of the most spectacular Romanesque parish churches in England, its timeless rural setting does nothing to prepare you for the shock of the west front of the church and the riot of 12th century carving both outside and inside the building.

Built in 1853 on the site of a Roman settlement, it is the latest in a succession of churches dating back to 1230AD.
