An attractive, thriving, late Victorian church, with a modern attached church centre.

A magnificent medieval church boasting carved angels and tie beam roof; Olaudah Equiano, former slave and prominent abolitionist got married here in 1792.

In the centre of the town, just to the east of the site of what was once an important castle, and close to the River Nene, this church has a long and complex history, all reflected in its unusual internal arrangements.

The most memorable feature of the outside of the church is the square tower with its massive buttresses.

St Peter's is a beautiful Grade I listed church which dates back to the 15th century and it contains many ancient artifacts which are on display including a particularly fine piece of stained glass in its east window.

The church was designed by Vernon Royle, who was much influenced by Sir Basil Spence’s three churches in Coventry.

St Peter's stands beside the Wisbech Canal, a navigable arm of the River Nene.

The churchyard here is famously said to have inspired Thomas Gray to write his Elegy in a Country Churchyard in 1750, and he is buried close to the east wall of the church.
