St Matthew
Walsall, West Midlands
St Matthew’s church has an amazingly rich history and preserved records to show it.
Traditional town centre Central Hall with a 1929 'Rank cinema style' frontage and a magnificent fully restored Nicholson & Lord organ which can be heard (or played) by arrangement.
Walsall, West Midlands
Discover a hidden gem! The solid stone and brick exterior of Central Hall, set next to a busy one-way road, surrounded by buildings and easily driven past - gives little clue to what lies inside. The beautiful, horseshoe shaped worship space, with mellow wood, original stained glass and a wonderful acoustic, was once the upper gallery of the original 1000+ capacity church.
Floored in the 1970's to create office space beneath (which now houses our Advice and Foodbank service to the people of Walsall), the church was sensitively refurbished as a Millenium project. Accessible meeting rooms/social space added behind give seemless access from the rear car park - much needed as we are built into a hill! Entry via the 1929 cinema inspired Ablewell Street foyer, with original tiling and marble stairs, has a lot of steps. Archive photographs of the orginal and subsequent phases of church's history are available.
The Nicholson & Lord Organ, still regularly used, is a fine example of its type, documented history available, our organist is very happy to show interested parties.
