The bridge chapel at Rochester was built by Sir John de Cobham, who lived at nearby Cooling Castle.

The church, which has some Saxon features, has been at the heart of the community for over 900 years.

The medieval church was destroyed during the siege of Rockingham Castle in the civil war as was the village that then surrounded it.
