St Peter’s church dates from 14th century, celebrating its 700th anniversary in 2020, and is the oldest building in Portishead; as such, it has witnessed the changes and growth of the town.

The chapel was built in the mid 14th century when the stone bridge replaced a wooden one, although the upper part, including the west front, was rebuilt in 1847-8.

Legend has it that Illtyd used to retreat to this spot during Lent.
