The church was originally based in Antioch, Syria, but since the 15th century our patriarch has lived in Damascus, Lebanon.

This is the only Eastern Orthodox Church in South Yorkshire and some members of the congregation travel quite long distances to worship here. The community was formed in 1994 and originally worshipped in the cemetery chapel at Conisbrough.

The church was built in 1923 by the Roman Catholic Diocese of Leeds and later was part of the new Diocese of Hallam, from whom we purchased the building. The church building is modern. Its functional design allows the congregation to worship God and practise its faith in the way it has done for 2000 years. However, the decorations in the church are beautiful and include many icons of saints around the walls.

There is an exhibition of vestments and photographs of the Sacred Vessels, the Censer and the Gospel Book. All these things help us to contemplate the beauty and majesty of God and help us to become saints through the Grace of God given to us through prayer, fasting, almsgiving and the Holy Sacraments.
