Our Lady of Egmanton

From the outside, this looks like an unexceptional medieval church, but its interior underwent an extraordinary transformation in 1896-8.

The church and shrine of our Lady of Egmanton here had long been, and still is, a place of pilgrimage, and the Duke commissioned Sir Ninian Comper to give the church the most lavish of face lifts. The result is unbelievably ornate and colourful, with organ case, font cover, pulpit, rood loft and screen all in a riot of red, blue, green and gold.
