St Mary’s church building is striking, it has a square tower with a peal of six bells and dates back to the 12th century.

The church dates from around 1450 and is built of red sandstone, with a tall, typically Somerset tower and contains a fabulous rood turret housing the spiral stair leading to the top of the rood screen.

The present church contains a fragment of a 13th century nuns choir that was constructed alongside a pre-existing parish church, which explains its unusual shape.

The Grade I church is mainly Perpendicular but it possesses on the north side an exquisite late Norman doorway.

The church traces its origins back to 1863 when eight residents of Blackheath asked Charles Haddon Spurgeon of the Metropolitan Tebernacle for permission to start a separate fellowship in this area.

The meeting house was designed by Trevor Dannatt, who was awarded an OBE in the 2016 New Year Honours.
