St Michael's dates from the early 12th century, although most of what can be seen today is of 14th-15th century date. In the Middle Ages the church was adjacent to a fortified manor house which was regularly used by the Bishops of Durham. The beautiful interior contains a medieval font made of frosterly marble. A lepers squint can also be seen. There are a number of memorial tablets to the Surtees family of Mainsforth Hall, including Robert Surtees, author of the major 19th century history of County Durham, who is buried in the churchyard.
