Status: Open
Next Deadline : Tuesday 14 April 2026
Grant Size : Up to £40,000
Works Cost : Up to £80,000 (incl VAT and fees)
Thanks to new funding we have received to support Grade I and II* listed churches, chapel and meeting houses in Wales to make urgent repairs, we have created this additional grant scheme.
This grant programme supports urgent and essential maintenance and repair projects, where the cost is up to £80,000. Grants will never exceed 50% of the net project costs to a maximum of £40,000.
Key information for your application: please read before applying
We will consider applications from Grade I and II* listed Christian places of worship, of any denomination, across Cymru/Wales.
Grade II and unlisted buildings can still apply through our regular grant streams.
The application process begins with an eligibility quiz. If you cannot answer yes to each question your application will not be successful.
The questions include:
- Is yours a Christian place of worship within Cymru/Wales, and open for at least six services of public worship each year?
- Do you own the building or have the right to carry out the work? If the church is not part of a major denomination, then has it got charitable status?
- Was your place of worship built as a place of worship originally and is it more than 30 years old? And are the works that this phase will inform, be either directly to the building or attached to it?
- Is the building open to the public for a minimum of 100 days a year beyond worship use?
- Have you already raised at least 50% of this phase of the total project cost?
- Is the project yet to start (we don't accept applications for projects that have already started)?
- Are two quotes in place for each element of the work in this application?
- As a listed building, is the project being led by a qualified professional, with conservation accreditation from a recognised institution (please review the guidance note for more detail)
Before applying be sure to first read the Guidance note below. The guidance contains notes on the scoring criteria, advice on completing the application form, a list of supporting documents that will be required from you, and details of the terms and conditions of any grant award made etc.
Please read the Guidance Note in full before applying.
To apply - you will need to scroll down to the bottom of the page and click on 'apply for a grant'.
We have prepared a Word document for you to review the questions and prepare your answers in advance. Please note that applications will only be accepted using the online Medium form. When you go onto Benefactor – the National Churches Trust’s grants portal – please still apply under the Medium form.
Decisions on all grant applications are made by our Grants Committee, which is made up of experts from the church and heritage sectors, which meets three times a year (usually March, July and November). Decisions cannot be made between meetings.
We are delighted to have secured the support of a number of funders with restricted funding for places of worship in Cymru/Wales which therefore means we have this opportunity to support even more churches, chapels and meeting houses with larger grants within Wales.
Nevertheless, applicants must still meet our eligibility criteria and present quality projects that meet the support of our Grants Committee. For that reason, we cannot guarantee the success of an eligible application or the size of the grant that will be awarded.
This also means that we can not guarantee that a successful application will be offered a grant at the size requested.
We always encourage any applicants to apply for as many other grants as possible and to start local fundraising as early as you can. For more funding sources and fundraising advice please click here.
