The most striking thing about Holy Trinity, England's most northerly parish church, is that because the main body of the church was built in Cromwellian times, it has neither a tower nor a steeple.
Berwick upon Tweed, Northumberland
This is not the only fascinating architectural element. Set within the 16th century Elizabethan walls of Berwick upon Tweed and founded on a 12th century structure, the present 16th century church was significantly altered in the Victorian restoration of 1855, which inserted a chancel for the first time and replaced Gothic features with Classical windows and arcading.
The interior still contains many fine elements that are roughly contemporary with the Commonwealth church. These include roundels in the west window of 16th and 17th century Flemish or Dutch glass, monuments in the north and south aisles, Jacobean style woodwork in the west gallery, the pulpit and tester, and 17th century panels in the 19th century choir stalls.
The 1893 reredos is an early design of Sir Edwin Lutyens.
