The parish church of St Peter has a slightly unusual approach; the path leading to the south door is cut between two high banks. The church itself is quite pretty and dates to the 12th century.

The name comes from old English 'Slohtre', which 'muddy place'. Today's village the epitome of idyllic charm. Straddling the banks of the River Eye, also known as Slaughter Brook, the village has remained utterly unchanged for more than a century with no building work taking place at all since 1906 when the cottages around the square were reconstructed by the famous architect Sir Edward Lutyens.

Literature in the church records the fact that the village suffered no fatalities in the Great War but the Rolls of Honour for both World Wars are to be found proudly displayed in the village hall. A simple wooden board records the 24 men and one woman (Driver Agnes Witts) from the village who fought in the Great War. 36 villagers went to the Second World War and all returned.

On return from hostilities after the Great War the Women of the village presented the servicemen of Upper Slaughter with Certificates of recognition as a 'small token of their appreciation and thanks for your help towards the attainment of victory'.
