The Bolsover Colliery Company gave the site and £3,000 for the building of this miners’church, in red brick, which was dedicated in 1928.

Built in 1729 it has for most of its life been homed to a committed worshipping Christian community, yet every week 1000s of tourists, pilgrims and visitors also enjoy our church building.

Nothing prepares you, as you climb the 13 steps up to St Stephen for the majestic space within, the dome is Wren's finest and based on his original design for St Paul's.

This is a Wren church with a steeple of 1713 and fine windows, including one for Dick Whittington, who is buried here.

On Easter Day 1727 St Mary Woolnoth of the nativity was reopened after it’s rebuilding by Nicholas Hawksmoor, which took 12 years and was paid for from the proceeds of the tax on sea borne coal.

The church lies over the remains of the Basilica, the northern most part of the great Roman Forum built in the first century AD.

Holy Trinity was built in 1844 to replace an old chapel of ease, which had been built c1535.

The present church contains a fragment of a 13th century nuns choir that was constructed alongside a pre-existing parish church, which explains its unusual shape.

Part of the headquarters of the Mothers Union, this chapel is full of images and artwork celebrating women.

Mainly Norman, with traces of reused Roman brick, St Andrew's has a pretty clapboard bell turret and porch, and shares a churchyard with the later church of St Christopher.

The beautiful church of St Christopher's, built in 1320, is unique in Essex as it shares a churchyard with the older St Andrew's.

When Wren rebuilt this 12th century church in 1681-86, he employed some of the greatest craftsmen of his age.
