The name Elsecar is thought to mean ‘Elsi’s marsh’. Elsi was a Saxon lord who owned land here and ‘car’ is an old word for low, swampy ground.

Garvald Church is a beautiful parish church in an idyllic rural setting and with a historic connection to St Mary’s Abbey in Haddington, many finely carved gravestones, two burial aisles and a rare mort house.

Hooton Pagnell was recorded in the Domesday Survey, although there is no mention of a church we know one existed as in 1089 Ralph Paganel granted the church to the Priory of Holy Trinity in York.
