Through its long and fascinating history the church, which is at the heart of Pontefract town centre, has continuously developed to meet the changing needs of the community it serves.

Built around 1850 by architect Joseph Hansom with apse chancel in an unfussy and restrained Victorian gothic style.

St Andrew’s has gained international fame when it was chosen by Hornby, the model train makers, to be the church for their model village of Skeldale.

As at Long Sutton, the tower here almost stands aside from the main body of the church.

The medieval church was destroyed during the siege of Rockingham Castle in the civil war as was the village that then surrounded it.

Our medieval church was originally one of two in the town, St Peter's is now in the custody of English Heritage.
