St Bart's is a grade I medieval church with 13th century wall paintings, 15th century box pewsand a crypt with tales of being used as a prison; it's the birthplace of Taverner and Jane Austin's cousin was Rector.

From the 12th century this has been a place of daily prayer, and an extraordinary building, created for the glory of god.

A church has stood on the present site since Norman times, this probably being the third, but in 1786 the medieval building, which had a history of instability, was judged beyond repair and pulled down.

The building is in a Byzantine style with stock brick walls relieved by bands of purple Berkhampstead bricks and Portland Stone dressings.
