A notable Grade II* church designed by Temple Moore and consecrated in 1915.

The church was built in 1843 by Sydney Smirke and enlarged 1860.

It is believed that St James was founded in Pottergate in 1689, as there is an old pewter alms dish inscribed with that date.

Spacious perpendicular style church with many medieval features including the Hotspur pillar and a charter from 1464 charter of Henry VI that two 'burgesses' of Alnwick rebuilt their church.

There seem to have been chapels of the Knights Templars and Hospitallers in Wetherby but these would be distinct from a parochial chapel for the use of the ordinary laity.
