The church was built by Willian Crambe Reid to fulfil his father's dying wish and was designed in 1928 by the architect Leslie Grahame Thomson.

Remarkable Norman stone carving decorates the arch of the original entrance, this kirk has its foundation in the early 12th century although there were additions in the 17th and 18th centuries.

St Swithun is 500 years old in 2023 and sits in the centre of an ancient Saxon hill top village with some intriguing and beautiful ancient bench ends carved at the end of the 16th century.

Opened in 1927, the current church is a plain cross.

Originally built between 1856 and 1859 by the Monteith family of Carstairs, in 1907 it was all but destroyed by fire, and was rebuilt between 1908 and 1910.
