St Andrew

Our church is a Grade I listed building dating back to the 12th century. 

The church has been modified many times in the intervening years mainly in the 14th,17th and 19th centuries. The tower was added in the 14th century and this houses two ancient bells the oldest dating back to the 14th century and inscribed ‘MARIA all’. The font on the ground floor of the church tower dates back from the 13th century and is a simple circular bowl and stem. The church has remnants of old wall paintings but there subject and detail has long faded. The nave has a 17th century barrel vaulted ceiling with plastered panels and moulded ribs. At the base of each rib is a painted shield bearing royal emblems. 

The north transcept is particularly interesting as it house important Grade I listed tombs. One such impressive tomb is that of John Trenchard who was the Secretary of State between 1693 and 1695 during the reign of William III and Mary II. There is an impressive lecturn and Pulpit and the steps leading up to the chancel which was restored and redesigned in the 19th century. There is a beautiful arch braced collar beam ceiling and stunning stained glass windows above the altar and on the eastern elevations. So much more to see so please do come and visit.
