The ancient cross in the churchyard is 15th century and two giant yews were grown to provide soldier’s bows and are said to be among the oldest in the diocese.

A picturesque Victorian neogothic church full of history and fascinating surprises, set in attractive wildflower gardens and within walking distance of the world heritage stone ruins of the original 11th century church.

The church tower is a landmark for a long way around, and was rebuilt in 1861 to the original medieval designs, but in blue lias stone, rather than the Ham stone from which the rest of the church is built.

People have been worshipping in this beautiful place for over a thousand years, the church dates back to the 13th century and there is a real feeling of tranquillity and spirituality here standing on the bank of the River Stour.

St Peter’s is first recorded in the Chronicles of Battle Abbey when it was donated to Battle Abbey, along with a monastic house known as Llandeulyddog, in about 1110.

Church, manor house and overall setting combine here to make a memorable scene.

Situated on the Pilgrimage trail to St David's Cathedral the present Grade ll listed building was erected in 1865 although there has been a place of worship here since before 1066.

St Mary's is worth visiting for its beautiful blend of historic Norman and Victorian architecture, featuring a rare 15th century barrel vaulted roof and its peaceful setting near to the River Stour.
