There's an awful lot of historical water under St Ives bridge and chapel.

Built largely between 1531 and 1536 by Henry VIII, much of the original red brick building erected by Henry VIII still survives today, including the Chapel Royal, the gatehouse, some turrets and two surviving Tudor rooms in the State apartments.

On entering the Cathedral all the awkwardness of the red brick exterior disappears and you find yourself in an inspiring church quite unlike any other you will have ever seen.

Welcome to the ancient parish church of St Just in Penwith, a fine building located at the very heart of the town, the most westerly town on the mainland of Britain, about seven miles west of Penzance.

The current church building dates from the 13th century. It was consecrated by Bishop Walter Bronescombe on the 14th August 1261.

Beautifully sited on the River Windrush, St Kenelm's stands next to the dramatic ruined manor house of the Lovells, who rebuilt the original priory church or minster in the mid 15th century.

This is one of Cornwall’s largest and architecturally most intriguing churches, retaining an open feel partly because the pews were removed altogether at one time and when replaced in the 1970s wide alleyways were left, as they would have been in medieval times, to allow for processions to pass easily.

The place name St Levan comes from Selevan or Salamon, the original patron saint of the church, chapel and holy well here. Salamon is recorded as a 10th century Cornish dedication and may be the Breton king assassinated in 874AD.
