With a history reaching to the dawn of Christianity in Craven, this magnificent building tells a thousand year story with mediaeval piety and Tudor jerry building.

A late Georgian independent chapel, surrounding by fields and farms on the Lancashire/Yorkshire border which was founded in 1816 by farm workers at the nearby Martin Top Farm.

Replacing an earlier Independent chapel dating from 1826, the present church building was erected in 1899.

In 1712 the church was built as a chapel of ease in a farmer’s barn.

St Helen's was designed by John Carr, an 18th century architect and associate of the great Robert Adam and sometime Lord Mayor of York.

This delightful 12th century church is home to a magnificent 5 order Norman arched doorway and an internationally recognised 850 year old 'viking' wooden door.

The church was consecrated in 1912 by the Bishop of Manchester, and due to it's location was dubbed 'The Church on the Cliffs' by the first People's Warden.

Remains from the church’s early life and history can be seen just inside the church, there are fragments from a Saxon cross, an ancient gravestone with scissor markings, as well as remains from a Norman arch and some ancient stained glass from the medieval church.

St Margaret's was built in 1879 in the late Neo Gothic, or Perpendicular, style.
