Penwortham, Lancashire
Our church has a rich history, originating as the nearby Iron Church or 'Tin Tabernacle' in the early 1900s, before relocating about half a mile away to its current site in 1970. In 1972 the parish of St Leonard was established, taken out of the nearby ancient Parish of St Mary, Penwortham and St Paul, Farrington.
The building offers a bright and welcoming worship space under a 'pyramid style' roof - not untypical of buildings of the time. Behind the Altar there is a glass crucifix window through which the sun spectacularly illuminates the church interior. Some of the fittings from the original church have been retained including the Altar and a wrought iron cross which is fixed to the outside of the church. Our large multi pipe organ was rescued from a nearby church due for demolition. We are proud of our musical tradition and hold musical concerts on a regular basis. We are also proud of our environmental record with our grounds winning various local community awards plus we have received national recognition for our wider environmental achievements. In 1996 we completed a major building project - a large and small hall. These are both extensively used by community groups and private bookings and are hired on most days, reinforcing our position at the heart of our community.
