St Nicholas’ church, mainly 15th and 16th century, is possibly on an 8th century site (probably pre-Norman) with a 60ft tower built in the 14th century.

This enchanting little church, stepped down the slope of a Cotswold hillside, is just as ancient as it looks and feels.

Essentially, St Mary's is a building of the 13th century, though the tower and the great arches supporting it are 14th century, inserted into the earlier building.

Fields and trees surround this wonderful ancient church, which seems connected to the East Anglian landscape around it by its walls of flint cobbles and its roof of reed thatch.

The church is nationally famous for its Ascension Day 'Well Dressing' ceremony when the senior pupils from the Bisley Blue Coat School dress the wells in thanksgiving for the well restoration in 1863.

The combination of church and cottages here is rural England at its most appealing.
