The old church at Mereworth was found to spoil the view of John Fane, 7th Earl of Westmorland, from his splendid new Palladian house, so he demolished it (he had already done away with the old castle and the village) and built a new classical church, and a new village, nearby.

Dating from the 13th and 14th centuries, the church commands a large open space surrounded by pretty Georgian houses and as befitting this large village is quite large.

There is evidence of a church on this site in Saxon times, consecrated on the 29th September 998, of which nothing now remains.
