Taxal, Derbyshire
The church of St James, Taxal is a hidden gem, rich in history and heritage, set in an idyllic rural location. The church is a favourite venue for weddings and also has a beautiful and extensive graveyard; it is frequently visited by walkers and those tending graves and is open to the public four days a week. St James is one of two church buildings in the parish of Whaley Bridge and has a joint congregation which worships on alternate weeks at Holy Trinity, in the centre of the town. Bell ringing practice takes place every Monday evening.
The church was founded in the 12th century and some elements of this first building are incorporated in the square bell tower, the rest of which is 14th century. The small church was restored in the late 17th and 18th centuries, at which time the battlements were added to the tower. One of the yew trees in the graveyard has been dated as over 800 years old.
The central body of the church was significantly rebuilt during the time of Taxal’s most famous rector, Samuel Evans, in the late 19th century. The work included three magnificent Victorian stained glass windows, an alabaster pulpit, new pews, an organ, the tower clock and 4 new bells. There are a variety of interesting memorials to peruse including a memorial slab of slate in the chancel bearing the name of Roger Jaudrell who fought at the Battle of Agincourt in 1415 and a memorial plaque for Michael Heathcote who was Gentleman of the Pantry and Yeoman of the Mouth (food taster) to George II.
A booklet re the history of the St James is available to purchase as you enter and gives a much deeper insight into the origins and history of the church, its rectors and its benefactors.
