A good vantage point from which to enjoy the setting of this church is the bridge over the Great Ouse.

Preston, the priests farm, was also known formerly as Preston juxta Northampton and Preston Juxta Piddington, it is first referred to in the Domesday Book (1086) as Prestone.

At first glance the church at Denton might look medieval but in fact all of it, apart from the 13th century tower, was rebuilt in 1827/28 by Charles Squirhill.

Built between 1327 and 1377 during the reign of Edward III, the stone carvings high on the walls of the chancel commemorate this fact as Edward looks across from the south side at his wife, Queen Phillipa, on the north.

The first chapel on this site was a meeting room in a building also used as a pub called The Plough, which stood here in the 17th century.

St Mary's has occupied this site for over 900 years, although we are uncertain of the date of consecration.

Modest and unassuming from the outside, Stoke Orchard's little church has many features showing its origins in about 1170.

The churchyard site was an ancient burial ground going back to Anglo Saxon times, a buried Celtic cross, dating back to approximately 750AD, now sits proudly in the entrance porch.
