If All Saints Northampton is the county’s response to Wren’s London city churches, Holy Cross Daventry is that to Gibbs St Martin in the Fields.

The church stands on rising ground above the main road and the first thing you see is the great west end tower, richly ornamented, with spire above (the latter replaced in 1821 after a fire).

Set on the Llyn Peninsula, St Mary is medieval in origin but the font is the only survivor of this age, a roughly hewn monolith in brown stone, painted white on its inner face, almost sunk into the shaft beneath.
