Built in 1792 on a Greek cross plan, this huge structure stands on the site of the old church of St Augustine, dating back to 1275.

The 13th century bridge that crosses the Ouse in this harmonious old stone village is a relative newcomer in comparison with the church, which dates back to around 980, and possibly even to Roman times.

The late Queen Elizabeth, the Queen Mother, was born and brought up just to the south of the village at St Pauls Walden Bury, home of the Bowes-Lyon family since the 18th century.
