Stoke Rivers church is dedicated to St Bartholomew and sits on a hill overlooking the sea in a small parish. It is accessed by a grassy footpath which in spring time is filled with flowers.

The church dates from the late 15th/early 16th century, and is a Grade I listed building. There was a significant alterations made in 1832 when the chancel was lengthened and much internal plasterwork added. The font is difficult to date, as it is undecorated. As it is lead lined it is most probably of 15th century origin. The wooden dado dates from 1769, and the barrel ceiling was built when the roof was replaced in 1832. The Royal Coat of Arms on the west wall is that of King George III (1760-1820). The pulpit is made from finely carved Renaissance bench ends.

There is a 17th century Jacobean chest and an antique bobbin chair, the gothic style lectern is a modern addition. The original bench ends, the screen and other fine carvings were bought by Earl Fortescue in 1902 for Weare Gifford Church and Hall. Stoke Rivers church was restored and reseated in 1905 with 116 seatings. Restoration work took place in the late 19th and early 20th century. A slate sundial over the porch by John Berry is dated 1770. The churchyard contains the old village well, and an interesting mystery structure which we'd love a historian to tell us more about.

A dedicated friends group care for the church and keep it well maintained and open every day. It hosts a community library and drop off point for the local foodbank, as well as being a place for prayer and reflection. The church is filled for worship at Easter, Harvest and Christmas - and at least three other services which often include a summer picnic. It also valued as a place for weddings, Christenings and funerals.

There is a bed and breakfast very nearby, and Champing is also available at the nearby church in Bratton Fleming. Come and stay!
