St John’s church is a wonderful small church in South Yorkshire, overlooking grand views of the Dearne Valley.

The church stands above the settlement and beach of Penbryn a popular, National Trust owned, stretch of the coast.

An almost unique medieval church which has enjoyed relatively little restoration such that it remains largely medieval dating from the 12th century and mentioned in the Norwich Taxation of 1254.

The present church of St Peter, originally dedicated to St Peter & St Paul, is the fourth stone church to occupy this site.

There has been a church on this site since 1893 although it was not completed until 1934; during the bombing of World War II it was seriously damaged by fire and when rebuilt in 1957 was reduced in size.

The church was rebuilt in Decorated Gothic style by the architect John Wing the younger for Sir John Palmer Bt in 1788.

The Benedictine Priory at Blyth was established by Roger de Busli in 1088, the first monastery in Nottinghamshire.

The church is the early 12th century and the subterranean charnel chapel houses one of only two remaining in situ medieval ossuaries (collections of human bones) in England.

This long, low church, with its rather dumpy 13th century tower, is an unlikely but harmonious mix of styles.

The current church dates from around 1800 and is situated in secluded setting with stunning views, which are enjoyed by visitors, who spend time on the benches appreciating the countryside.
