This is a large and exciting church founded, like Sherborne in 705; a nunnery here was dissolved in the 11th century and a college of canons served the parish until the Dissolution.

St Peter's is a beautiful Grade I listed church which dates back to the 15th century and it contains many ancient artifacts which are on display including a particularly fine piece of stained glass in its east window.

Winchelsea was built as a new, planned, town in 1288 after the old town was destroyed by the sea and the church was given a large and prestigious plot within a very large churchyard.

The chapel was built between the years 1387 and 1395 to designs by William Wynford, with Hugh Herland responsible for the traceried wooden ceiling and Thomas of Oxford for the glazing.

In the late 1200s the Archbishop of Canterbury established a college here for a master and six canons (priests), which accounts for the large size of this church, and also accounts for the timber framed houses opposite, which were where the master and his canons lived.
