All Saints is a beautiful and rather secluded medieval parish church in the South Downs, near Chichester in East Dean. It is part of the Valley Parish shared with Singleton and West Dean.

The church is especially notable for its age and architecture. Much of the building dates from the 12th century (Norman period), and the church has a rare cruciform layout with a central crossing tower - a sign that it was once considered a church of some importance despite the village’s small size.

Some highlights include:

  • A fine late 12th century Norman south doorway with carved stonework and recessed arches.
  • Early 13th century additions including the chancel and tower details.
  • Evidence of a lost north aisle, now blocked up but still visible in the masonry.
  • A simple octagonal font thought to date from the 17th century, possibly mounted on an upside-down Norman capital.
  • War memorials for both World Wars inside the church.

The setting is part of the appeal. The church stands among fields and downland scenery, with a traditional churchyard managed to encourage native grassland plants and insects.

Today the church is generally open daily during daylight hours and still holds services once a month as part of the local parish community. If you’re interested in Sussex churches, this one is a particularly atmospheric example of a rural Norman church that has evolved over nearly 900 years.
