Tucked within the tranquil village of West Dean, St Andrew’s church is a captivating blend of history, craftsmanship, and quiet beauty. This charming parish church, set close to West Dean College and Gardens, and in The South Downs National Park, invites visitors to step into a space where centuries of worship and community life are woven into every stone.
At first glance, the church’s traditional flint and stone exterior reflects its deep medieval roots, but it is what lies inside that truly surprises. St Andrew’s is renowned for its remarkable interior, much of which was restored in the 20th century under the patronage of the influential James family, following a devastating fire. Their vision transformed the church into an artistic treasure, rich with intricate detail and symbolism.
The stained glass windows depict St Andrew, St Richard and Christ with striking clarity and craftsmanship. Equally impressive are the finely carved wooden furnishings, including the pulpit and pews, which showcase exceptional Victorian artistry.
The church boasts an original 1936 Compton organ, installed by Edward James.
